At 13:20 on 7th September 2005 I saw a White-winged Black Tern sitting on the bank of the Axe Est. It did not perch there for long and flew up and away from me which is when I first made the i.d. The bird then sat on a post on the somerset side of the estuary before taking flight and heading towards the sewage works. I telephoned Mark Ponsford who arrived just after I had relocated the bird. It was now flying over the fields in the distance hawking with Black Headed Gulls. We drove to the east side of the wildfowl lagoons and watched the bird at a closer distance. It was at this point that it flew over our heads heading towards the u.v. pools and the river axe. I could not relocate the bird in a brief search back at the u.v. pools but a female Marsh Harrier flew over at close range giving a perfect end to my lunch break.
