This bird was found on 28th September after a big low pressure system had moved across the atlantic which started on the previous day. A Red-eyed Vireo was the first reported passerine to make landfall at Inishboffin in Co. Galway. This bird was discovered by a non-birder who had watched it for an hour before he saw any birders to tell of the news.
When I arrived, the conditions were not good. It was very overcast and light rain. Despite this the bird could be tracked moving around in the canopy by its distinctive call described as a "tzit".
On the third day of its stay, the bird could be seen feeding around an ivy clad wall that was attracting insects. Did not see the bird catch anything but I was told by a birder that he watched the warbler catch a Speckled Wood.
There have been 32 previous records of Blackpoll Warbler in Britain. A lot of them have been one day birds making it not easy to twitch.
